Following a thorough investigation and in close coordination with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, it has been determined that this was not a hate crime or bias-related incident.

Bergenfield Police Chief Mustafa Rabboh confirmed:

“This was a random act of violence. No words were exchanged prior to the assault, and there is no indication that this attack was motivated by race, religion, or ethnicity. It was simply an act of unprovoked violence, and the suspect will be charged as such.”

The suspect, identified as Jeffrey Zicchinella, a 40-year-old male from Ridgefield Park, NJ, exited his vehicle and assaulted a Bergenfield resident. What occurred was unacceptable, but the actions of the residents and the swift response of our police department demonstrate the strength and unity of our town.
